"Everything you've ever wanted is on the other side of fear." - Jack Canfield
As much as Dexter loved nature, he hated his daily encounter with birds. Something about them gave him the creeps, and more than one occasion in the forest led him to some close encounters he had a hard time forgetting every time the little beasts flew overhead. He loved the deer, the squirrels, and the rabbits - he even loved the big predators that roamed the mountain's lush landscape. But, when it came to those little demons and their flapping wings, he kept a safe distance, and at times found himself running away with his tail tucked between his legs at the sight of a little songbird in his path.
Everything changed one day when he saw wings overhead that were not carrying the feathered body of his most feared forest critter, but rather, a body much like his own. Paws dangled below that magnificent set of wings that darkened the sky above him for the briefest moment as whatever it was soared by. At that moment he questioned: was it wings he was afraid of? Or was it something else about the birds? Curiosity got the better of him as he followed along where he had seen that winged creature fly.
When he found her in a clearing, he could only stare as an enormous flock of birds surrounded the... dog? She was gorgeous, though, he couldn't deny that. And she was something he had never seen before in his life. For weeks he returned to that same area where she, like clockwork, soared in to play with her bird friends. He was never quite brave enough to approach her. He only wished there weren't so many birds in his way.
When she took notice of him, he froze where he had been lurking in a dense brush trying to stay out of sight. He couldn't help but to watch her, she was always so happy and carefree. That happiness was contagious and left him feeling so full of joy. When she made eye contact with him, he wasn't at all prepared and just stood there the whole time she made her way over to him. With her came the birds, too. She was almost in front of him when one of them landed atop his head. His eyes widened as he felt the tiny daggers of its claws hopping along his head.
"Are you afraid?" Asked the dog... bird... what was she? He still wasn't sure. She laughed when he remained completely still both in shock from her presence as well as the thing atop his head. "Ok, leave him be," she said, and just like that, the bird flew back to the ground. "You've been coming here for a while but you never play with us, why? We won't hurt you." She said as she studied him.
"I'm not a fan of birds..." he admitted shyly.
"Really? Who doesn't like birds?" She asked, opening her wings up wide. They were even more impressive up close, spanning much wider than he realized they did. No, it's not the wings I'm afraid of, I like the wings. "When you're not afraid, you should join us sometime." She said before prancing back to her flock.
He thought about that for a long time after that. He wanted her. He knew she was someone that would make his life better, yet those stupid birds... No, my stupid fear. He decided it was time to get over it, and with the next day he brought confidence to his stride as he ran to the spot he knew she'd be. He was still afraid of them. He didn't want to walk near them and feel their wings flapping near his head, but he also wanted so badly to get to know her. To share that happiness she always had.
He walked through the birds, closing his eyes for the first few steps. He heard them chirping and felt the air around him move as they got out of his way.
"You're here!" She said excitedly, dancing around him.
"I am." he said, opening his eyes. The birds did nothing to him, they were just birds, after all.
"See, nothing to fear," she said as her body wiggled in that contagious happiness that was all the more strong now that she acknowledged him, and now that that happiness was for him. He couldn't help but laugh.
"You're right, there is absolutely nothing to fear."
Of course, it still took time before the beasts became friends with him. With Priya's help, he found himself enjoying the birds eventually. He'd bring them seeds on his daily outings to meet her. They'd perch along his back as he listened to Priya humming songs to them. He realized one of his biggest fears was nothing but a hurdle to get him to the best place he'd ever been in his life.

The jumpiest of her siblings, Astra is easily frightened by any loud noises. She lives in constant fear of being struck by lightning, as she has a deep belief she was born without wings as an ill omen to avoid the sky at all costs. She hates the way thunder shakes the earth, and how erratic lightning is - it could strike anywhere, at any time. She’s certain of that.
When it so much as rains you will find Astra hiding in a basement, usually accompanied by blankets so she can’t see the flashes of light. The only essences that keep her calm are soft melodies and comforting aromas such as vanilla and lavender. She is obsessed with checking weather outlooks as she never wants to be caught outside or away from home when a storm strikes. Behind her fearful tendencies, Astra is, surprisingly, very outgoing. She loves to talk and talk, much to her siblings’ dismay at times. She’s also a very in your face kind of gal and loves cuddling. Finding a cuddle buddy to wait out storms with her - someone to talk with and distract her from her fears - would be her dream come true. Seasons don't fear the reaper Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain, we can be like they are. |
While Ornitho stands for a fear of birds, this fearless pup is afraid of nothing. Rather, he is much like his mother. He loves birds as she does, and helps people get over their fear of them. After all, if you see this spunky pup playing in a flock of birds, how could you possibly see them negatively anymore? He embraces the little, or sometimes big, creatures. He also possesses some of his mother's ability to control and talk to them.
He loves nature and, you guessed it, anything bird. He's a bird watcher and loves finding rare and exotic species to make his friends. He can distinguish birds by the smallest sample of their songs, and can also mimic them to perfection. While he seems a little on the crazy side, he's actually one of the saner of his littermates. When you can get him away from his birds he loves watching movies, cuddling, and enjoying quality time with his loved ones. Just don't be too surprised if he brings a bird along for the occasion! Baby take my hand, don't fear the reaper We'll be able to fly, don't fear the reaper |

Repetition. That is Motte's advice for overcoming fears. You see, Motte was once afraid of moths - so afraid she would not turn lights on at night for fear of attracting them. Her father taught her to face her fears, and it worked. Very slowly Motte managed to start turning lights on. It started with a lot of yelling and fleeing when the little, fluttering bugs would divebomb her. Eventually, when she realized nothing terrible would happen, her fears transformed into love. She realized these little insects were no threat, but instead were beautiful creatures in all sorts of patterns and sizes.
Motte is as colorful as her new friends. She's got a bright personality and rarely does she not smile. She is a creature of the night now that she has the courage to go outside, and finds all kinds of fun adventures by flashlight. She is, perhaps, a bit on the reckless side now that she's overcome the one fear blocking her path. This rambunctious pup is always up for games and adventures, and she's rarely serious about anything. Now that she has taken flight, she's quite unstoppable. 40, 000 men and women everyday, Redefine happiness Another 40, 000 coming everyday, We can be like they are |
While it may appear Triska wasn't given the gift of wings... you're wrong. Triska was indeed one of the pups gifted with wings, however, the pure insanity of this girl caused her to needlessly and restlessly pluck all of her feathers out until her wings were no more. How does one manage to entirely destroy their wings, you ask? Triska is obsessed with numbers and analyzing everything. She thinks numbers make up the inner workings of life itself - and that accidentally including one certain number is the reason she has horrible luck.
The number 13 is something Triska is obsessed with. She is terrified of ever doing anything that adds up, subtracts to, or otherwise, in some way, results in the number 13. For instance, if her breakfast consisted of taking 13 bites of cereal, well, that just doesn't happen anymore because she counts everything. She always makes sure to take a step over 13 before stopping, or to never be awake for exactly 13 hours of the day. It gets far more complex than that. However, that would make us all a little batty like Triska to even begin to explain how her mind works. Her siblings find her very odd because she is constantly mumbling numbers, counting what they do, and, in speeches one could only describe as delusional, panicking over silly things like saying 13 words in a sentence. Some think she has arithmomania on top of her fear of the number thirteen, and they are probably, sadly, very correct. She's jittery and constantly hyped up on caffeine, afraid to even sleep for the fear of something adding up to thirteen in her dreams. To her, it can be a matter of life or death. When Cato looks into mirrors, it isn’t himself he sees - or at least that’s what he claims. He sees something that looks like him, but it doesn’t look at him. At least not with the same expression he has on his face. But it isn’t just that. He also sees other things in mirrors. Demons, perhaps. Or ghosts. He’s not certain, as he never gives them more than a quick glance before getting as far away as possible.
He lives without ever actually looking at himself in a mirror because of these mysterious entities that haunt him. No one is sure if he’s actually seeing anything, or if he’s simply noticed some shadows and let his mind wander too far. He is a creative type, so it isn’t too far-fetched of an idea. Cato loves painting, dancing, modeling and singing to keep his mind off his lurking fears. He’s quiet and sweet, if not a bit irrational - and he's very handsome, too. He enjoys his modeling gigs as a way to see himself. Sometimes his fears make it hard to get along with him because he refuses to go anywhere with mirrors, and sometimes talks endlessly about the possibilities of what he’s seeing in them. He has a hard time making friends because of it, but he can’t go without explaining why he tosses blankets over every mirror when he’s visiting friends, or suddenly runs out of the house when he spots one of those monstrosities. Because of his overwhelming fear and anxieties controlling his life, he often keeps to himself, even though he is probably the kindest of the puppies. The candles blew then disappeared The curtains flew then he appeared, saying don't be afraid |
Death comes to us all, but it is how we choose to look at death that makes it a scary or peaceful event. It is one fear that nearly anyone can agree they have, except Thana. Thana was gifted with the ability to help people transition through end of life processes, both before and after they are gone. She can see spirits, and she enjoys bringing comfort to the often uneasy event of death.
Thana enjoys hospital work because she has a gift of making people calm and content, even in the worst of times. She has a soft and pleasant voice that is almost hypnotic in the way it transforms scared, grieving families into understanding, content, and peaceful ones. Most people get worn down doing the work she does, but Thana, with her great understanding of death, actually looks forward to her days at work. Some people think she must be a little twisted inside to find pleasure in death, but it's quite the opposite. She's happy, friendly, wise, and quite grounded in reality. To her, death is not an ending, just a beginning to another part of a spirit's journey. Outside of work she enjoys studying religion and the various beliefs surrounding death because she believes it is not a one size fits all transition. She also enjoys "normal" things, such as reading, writing, and enjoying travel. To her, the world, and whatever worlds are out there that she has yet to visit, are fascinating and beautiful. Come on baby, don't fear the reaper |
